The lion’s share: A day in the life of… Pam De Silva (Junior Developer)

So let’s meet Pam De Silva who is a Junior Developer.

What is your morning routine?

The two constants in my morning routine these days are cats and coffee. I usually begin my day hanging out and playing with my cats, Miso and Olive. If it’s sunny, I’ll stroll to the park nearby and get a takeaway coffee. Otherwise, I’ll make a pour-over at home. Having this extra time in the mornings is one of the little luxuries I’ve come to appreciate since we’ve all been working from home. Then it’s back to my desk to catch up on the day’s tasks with the rest of my team on our morning standup.

Why does what you do matter?

As part of the development team, I get to build features that make it easier for our merchants to deliver meaningful experiences not just to win over new customers but reward existing ones so that they want to keep coming back for more. During my time here, I’ve seen our product evolve continuously – it’s been exciting to be part of this process behind the scenes, working with a brilliant team to ship features that matter to our merchants so that they’re able to create a loyalty program that they love.

How did you get the job?

I met a few people from the development team at a Silicon Milkroundabout event a couple of years back. At the time, I was transitioning from a career in Marketing and was looking for my first role in Software Development with a team that would support my learning and growth. I found the interview process to be quite encouraging especially during the pair-programming stages. If there was a problem I was unsure about, there was space to discuss and uncover a solution together which was really reassuring to someone who was new to the field.

What does a typical day look like?

I usually start just after nine in the morning. Most of my days are spent writing code whether it’s building a new feature or fixing a bug. But there are some days where I barely write any code. During these days, I’m either helping to plan and spec the implementation for new features, writing documentation or it could be my turn on developer support. If it is, I’ll spend the week working closely with the Customer Success team to help resolve any technical issues our merchants might be facing. I try to wrap up by six most days and switch off from work for the rest of the evening.

How do you spend your evening?

I like winding down with yoga. Besides getting to stretch out after spending most of the day sitting down, I find that it helps untangle my thoughts – especially if I’ve had a mentally intense day. Then it’s time to procure some dinner which almost always involves some cooking which I love! I might spend the rest of the evening either catching up with friends and family, playing a game on my Switch (current fav: Animal Crossing), reading, or curling up on the sofa with Miso and Olive to watch a movie or tv series. 

What’s your proudest achievement at LoyaltyLion?

There are so many firsts in software development that I’m proud of since I began at LoyaltyLion, but helping to revamp our customer-facing UI probably tops the list. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see a piece of software you had a hand in designing and building now being used by people all over the world as part of their online shopping experience.

Tell us your favorite thing about LoyaltyLion?

The fact that we’re such an animal-loving bunch. People are very much encouraged to bring their furry friends into work which makes for a fun atmosphere and serves as a reminder to get up from our desks and take breaks. And, if you can’t bring your pet into work, cameos on Zoom or sharing pet photos on Slack are always encouraged.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of joining the company?

If you’re looking for a place where developing your skills and growing in your career is a priority (and not just an afterthought) then LoyaltyLion is a great place to be. It might feel like a steep learning curve in the beginning, but rest assured you’ll be given lots of support and encouragement along the way. We’re also a friendly, helpful bunch so don’t be afraid to ask questions even if it’s directed to someone outside your team. Oh, and lastly, you’ll want to get acquainted with our recycling chart in the pantry as we take the practice very seriously. 🙂
